The grass whipped against his legs as he galloped in. His silver mane flew back, as did his tail, and his eyes were looking around. His belly was churning with worry. Something was up. He didn't know what, but as the rain poured down, whipping against his face and darkening his pelt, he got a strange feeling that it had something to do with him.
"Serren! Are you there?"
His voice boomed out into the Clearing. He had halted, and his head was whipping from side to side in search for his mate. He shivered slightly in the cold, but he was more worried about Serren. Last time he had seen her she had been heavily pregnant. Heavily pregnant with his foal. He bit his lower lip in worry. If she was hurt, it was his fault.

Serren hung her head, her eyes wide. The foal was turning. She could feel it. She let out a high pitched winnie as pain sparked through her. She heard Maximus calling.
She opened her mouth to speak "I'm here!" But no words came out. A loud neigh this time; But still laced with pain. She thought back to when she had seen others give birth; but this seemed harder. She fought to stay stanfing, and finally called out
"Maximus! I'm he-" She was cut short by another spasm. She looked back, her eyes wild and crazy with pain. As he came into view she felt a foal begin to come out.

Maximus' ears pricked as he heard her neigh and call out. He could hear the pain in her voice though. He spun around and galloped towards her, sliding to a halt next to her. For a wild horse, he had good moves. He fell to his knees next to her, putting his muzzle on her shoulder. He could feel the heat coming through. He began to rub his muzzle in circles on her shoulder.
"Calm down. Its okay..."
He had been with a mare giving birth before, and he knew there was nothing he could do. He hated it, but he had to live with it. Stones jutted up around them, while the few trees that were here leaves were blowing off. They blew around them, and the rain splatter onto them and the two.

Serren felt Maximus next to her felt the rest of the foal come out. Her eyes round and ears perked with excitment against the splattering rain, she began to lean back when she felt another spasm. She only got a glance at the foal. It was a smoky, but not a good look.
"Maximus! There's two of them!"
Serren neighed as another one, bigger this time, came out. This one was the spitting image of Maximus. The pain was gone; left only for the gentlest care and love. She turned around, nuzzling Maximus's shoulder on the way, and to her foal. She began to lick them, and found out they were both colts. But a bitter thought was at the edge of her brain. One was small. The little smoky black one. The grey one was already fidgeting.

As soon as he saw the first foal, he knew it was weak. He looked at it for a few moments, and then suddenly heard Serren. Two?! Shock rippled through him, and he immediately felt worried for her. Twins could be hard work, even he knew that. But he soon saw the second foal out safely, and he smiled. It looked exactly like him. He could already smell that they were colts, and watched as Serren began to lick them. He stood up straight, stretching his front legs, and spoke
" They're beautiful Serren. What will you name them?"
Suddenly, a flashback shot through his mind. Of him, of a pretty bay, and a small foal. The foal had a white mane and tail, and a bay body. He could tell it was a few years ago, and as the flashback ended he knew. It was the birth of his daughter, Bella. He shut his eyes for a moment, slightly downed, but when he opened them again he smiled at her. He wouldn't let Serren know that he felt a bit sad. She ahd just given birth to two new lives, and that was something to be proud of.
((Oh, and btw, my foal is going to be name Lovell.))

Serengeti paused from her licking as they started to move their wobbly legs. She had missed the look on Maximus's face, busy staring at the two colts. They had begun to whinney pitifully. One that looked like Maximus had already struggled nearly to his feet. The other one was still laying down.
She nosed them until they were both on their feet, with the help from Maximus. They began to nurse slowly, There tiny pink mouths visable.
"What do you think we should name them, Maximus?"
Serren asked, looking at them warmly. She was thinking of names, but was too basked in warmth of the two colts.

Maximus pricked one ear when he heard Serren's question. Names....he had never been good at them. He looked at both of them. There was quite a difference in both of them. The grey one was already standing steadily suckling, where the darker one's legs were wobbling, and he looked as though he could barely stay up. He went over to the dark one and gently allowed some of the foals weight come onto him. He was very light, even for a foal. Suddenly, he heard something rustle behind the foal. He quickly glanced at it, and saw that it was just a small, dark grey wolf. Then a name came to mind. Still holding some of the foal's weight, he spoke
"Lovell. That's what we'll call this one. It means wolf."
He watched Serren, wondering if she'd agree with him. Then he looked at the stronger grey one.
"You can name that one."

Serengeti listened as he spoke. Lovell. What a beautiful name. She looked behind her with her ears back as the wolf crawled away. She snorted threatingly at it, then turned back towards the foals.
"I love the name Lovell, Maximus. It sounds great."
She lowered her nose, gently touching her muzzle to his short, soft fur.
"Welcome to the world, little Lovell."
She thought a little bit. She stared into the dark night sky, the rain still falling. She suddenly thought of a name.
"What about... Amir? Is that okay?"

Maximus watched as the wolf walked away. He felt little Lovell stumble back, obviously finished suckling. He puled his muzzle away, and Lovell fell back onto his butt. For a second he looked surprised, but then he just gently eased his legs under him so he was lying upright. Maximus smiled softly at it. He had forgotten how cute and sweet foals were. He heard Serren say a name, and looked at her. Amir... He loved it. He went over to her side and nuzzled her cheek, gently saying "Its perfect."LOVELL For a moment an aura of warmth hung around me. Then suddenly icy coldness hit my body. It was like a million daggers piercing my skin. It almost burned. I squeezed my eyes tighter shut, as though that would make the warmth return. But it didn't. So i opened my eyes. I was looking up into a dark grey sky. I could see a grey horse, and a lighter coloured one as well. Next to me was another horse a bit bigger than me, but still I could tell he was my age. Suddenly, i realised. This was my family. I could feel my mother licking me and my brother. With the help of my father, i got up and began to suckle. The sweet, warm milk from my mother was delicious, and i smiled a little. But my legs were still wobbling, and i felt like i was going to fall. Suddenly i felt something else hold some of my weight. I saw my father, and i was grateful for his help. I heard him say a name, and then my mother call me that. Ah. So that was my name. Lovell. I finished suckling, and backed away. I felt my father pull away, and i immediately fell on my butt. I felt surprised, but then i felt relief flood my weak muscles. How could my brother stand so easily? He look so big and strong. I tucked my legs underneath my body, lying upright. I looked at my mother, wondering what to do next.

Serengeti watched the little foals. She felt warmth well up inside her. The smoky black one layed down, and stared at her with large, glassy eyes. She moved over and murmured
"Did you get enough milk, little Lovell? Oh, yes, little one, that's you're name. Lovell. I'm sure you'll love it."
She now turned to the larger gray full. He was already standing. She walked over, and bent her head.
"Amir. That is you're name, little one. Amir."

Amir looked around. Cold air was coming over him. He was vaguely aware of others around him. After a few minutes, he opened his eyes. There was a perlino mare, and a gray stallion. Beside him there was a smoky black little foal. This must be my brother!
Amir looked around, and began to suckle. The warm milk trickled down his chin. Once he was full, he heard something. Amir. That must be my name! Amir! I like it! He looked around, and started walking. He saw his brother and nosed him, kicking uo his heels.

MAXIMUS Maximus looked at Amir. He really did look like him. He watched as the colt went over and nudged his brother, kicking up his heels. Maximus could tell that Lovell was tired, and Maximus went over to his son. He put his muzzle gently on his shoulder, gently telling him that he should leave his brother alone. Then i lifted my head and looked around. They had to get to shelter, otherwise the foals could get sick easily. He went over to Serren, brushing by her. He gestured with his muzzle towards a small shelter big enough for them made out of fallen trees, branches and brambles. "C'mon. Lets get these foals into shelter before they get sick."LOVELL I saw my brother come over and nudge me, obviously gesturing for us to play. I gave off a soft moan, lying down on my side. I was tired, and just wanted to get some rest. I saw my father touch his shoulder, and i wanted to thank him but couldn't. I hadn't learned to talk completely yet. I heard my father speak, and i saw faintly him gesture to a small shelter i could just see. The rain was still thundering down, but i was used to the cold by now. I shivered under my cold coat. I wanted to get warm, and fast.

Serren watched as she saw the shelter they would be going to. She decided to check if it was safe, first. Through the rain, she cantered over to the sheltered area. She poked her nose inside. it was warm and dry in here.
She plodded around it, then a scent worked her way into her nostrils. It was canine. And fresh. But not alarming. It was the foxes they had seen earlier. They were looking at her with weary eyes, obviously tired. She called and they all came over.

Amir trotted over, his long legs not yet ready for cantering. As they all enntered the small covering, he saw a group of small orange things with fluffy tails. They looked cold and tired. He walked over to them, his muzzle low. He settled down next to them, sharing warmth. Even he didnt know about his bad side yet.

MAXIMUS Maximus watched Serren gallop over to the shelter. He glanced at the foals. His eyes turned worried as he looked at Lovell. Can he make it? He wondered, glancing back at the shelter. It wasn't that far away, but it wasn't close. He heard Serren call, obviously signalling it was safe. He saw Amir trot off, his stubby grey tail bobbing behind him. He laughed and shook his head, going over to Lovell. He looked down at him, then nudged him to his feet, and continued nudging him to the shelter. As they entered it, he looked around. It was dry and warm, and he looked down. He saw Amir cuddled up with the foxes, and smiled. He nudged Lovell in, and watched as the foal settled down on the other side of the foxes. He glanced at Serren, frowning now, and said "Little Lovell had a little trouble coming over."LOVELL I watched my mother go away, and went back to my upright position. Where had she gone? My weary eyes tried to follow her path, but got lost on the way. Then i heard her make a noise. I looked to where it had come from, and i saw a small shelter. Ah. So that's where they were going to stay. I watched my brother trot over to it, and a worried expression went across my face. I had to go all the way over there? I felt my father nudge me to my feet, and i had no choice but to go with it. I made my way as fast as i could to the shelter, still being nudged by my father. When i reached the shelter, i saw some animals next to my brother. They looked warm, so i snuggled down on the other side of them, closing my eyes and falling asleep.

Dawn light filtered through the covering of branches. The storm had past, leaving a pale pink-blue sky with fat clouds drifting across. Serren looked around, spying the foals. It seemed that the foxes had moved on, as they were not there anymore.
"Good morning, Maximus, Lovell, and Amir."
She was troubled with Lovell. He had barley made the journey walking, but Amir had made the journey trotting. She let the foals nurse, then nuzzled Maximus. She plodded outside, sniffing the air. She neighed, and couldnt help herself- It was too inviting. She kicked up her heels and galloped across a plain, dodging stones and sapling on the ground. Her hooves danced across the ground, kicking up dirt grass.

Amir blinked open his eyes. He looked around, wondering where he was. Then he understood, and got up. He saw his brother, and pushed his muzzle under Lovell's belly, and pushed up, trying to get him up. Once his taks was done, he tugged lightly on his brothers mane, bouncing around. His heels kicked out, and whinnied happily. The cool, crisp air was inviting to his young nostrils, and saw his father. He stiff-legged cantered over, now ready for it. He tried to stop in front of him, but the wet ground made him slide. He slid between his front legs, under his belly, and out his back legs.

MAXIMUS Maximus awoke, for a moment confused as to where he was. But then he remembered the night before. Stretching his stiff legs, he wandered over to check out Lovell. The young colt had already nursed, he could see, but he was lying down again. Maximus dropped his head to try and get him to his feet, but Lovell just refused. He decided to leave it, and went over to Amir. "Come on, son, Let's show your brother how fast we are."Gesturing for Amir to follow, he set off at a fast trot, and as he saw Amir begin to catch up, he set off at a slow gallop. Let's see what he can do.LOVELL I opened my eyes slowly, looking around. Where was i? Oh, yeah. The night before. I saw my brother standing to nurse, and i got up. Just. My legs wobbled dangerously, and for a moment i thought i was going to fall. But i stayed up. But only by luck. As soon as i had finished, i plopped back down, curling my legs under me. My father then woke up, coming over to try and nudge me up. I refused, giving out a small, high-pitched moan that only he could hear. I then heard him speak to my brother, then trot off. For the first time in my life, i was utterly alone. The breeze blew softly, making a whistling sound in the branches. It was soft, but i could hear it. I wondered how it made that sound. I got to my feet, wobbling of course. I took a few wobbly steps towards the noise. It got louder. I took a few more steps. Now it sounded like soft voices, whispering a poem. Amazed, i smiled softly and took a step towards it again. Suddenly, the ground gave way underneath me. Giving a small squeal, I began to slide downhill. Fast. And i didn't know how to stop. Mud splattered my belly and side, and just as i thought i wouldn't stop, i splashed into a big, muddy puddle. For a second i was sub-merged, but then i popped up at the surface. I was surprised. And yet, i was thrilled at the same time. I tried to speak "Tha...fun..."

Turned and saw little Lovell slide. She nearly jumped out of her skin. What if he got hurt, or worse?! She Jumped out of her frisk and raced across the wet grass, and skidded to a stop as she reached the crest of the hill. Then she saw him- Speeding down the hill. When he reached the mud puddle, Serren's heart nearly stopped. He didnt come up for nearly 4 seconds, and she feared he lacked the strength too. But when he did, Serren leaped down the hill. She reached the little foal just in time to here him speak. Happiness sparked inside her as he heard his first words.
"Lovell! You said you're firsst words! Say 'Lovell'. Lovell. That's you're name. Can you say it?"
Serren asked. She then began leading him towards a pond, where she began washing the mud that was on Lovell.

Amir galloped alongside Maximus. He was trying his best to keep up, and was struggling to keep his feet. He then tripped. His feet skidded across the ground and he wobbled dangerously- But then his father's muzzle helped him stay on his feet. They had no idea what had happned to Lovell, as they were preocupied.
"Th...ks"
Amir said, happy he said it right. Then he tried other things-
"Ma...mus... Lovl... Swen.... Am... Ame... Amir... Amir!"

MAXIMUS Maximus smiled as Amir said his first word. He listened, watching him as he tried out others. When he got his name right, he nodded, grinning. His face went serious, though, when he saw Lovell soaking and muddy, and Serren leading him towards a pond. Gesturing for Amir to follow, he galloped quickly over to her side. He dropped his head to check over Lovell. He seemed fine, other than the fact he was soaking wet. He laughed softly, looking over at Amir and saying "Looks like your brother decided to take a slide."Suddenly, Maximus remembered a plant he had seen earlier. Telling Amir to stay here, he galloped off towards the border. When he reached it, he found the plant. It was a dry, and slightly furry. He remembered using it to dry off himself once. It soaked water up quickly, and it would stop Lovell getting too cold. Snatching a few leaves, and galloped back with them in his mouth. Lovell was out of the pond from Serren washing him, and he drop the bundle of leaves in front of him. Picking one up, he began to softly rub Lovell with it. His dark coat soon got its chocolate tinge back, and he smile. This was working. LOVELL When my mother praised me for speaking, and asked if i could say my name, I thought for a second while I walked towards the pond. Could i say my name? I rolled the word over in my mind. Lovell. was pretty sure i could say it. I saw my brother and father coming back, and i smiled, flashing my pink gums. The pond water was cold, but cleaner and fresher than the puddle. I watched my father go off, wondering what he was doing. When i had gotten out of the pond, and was lying on the ground, i saw him come back. Some leaves were in his mouth. As he dropped them in front of me, i wondered what they were for. I squirmed as he rubbed one over me, but soon i felt warmth and dryness coming and stopped. Now that my father was here, and so was my brother and mother, i decided to try and say my name. I closed my eyes for a second, think about it. It was tim to try. If i didn't try, i never would. Opening my mouth, i tried to speak "Lo...Love...Lovell. Lovell."I repeated my name after i had successfully said it, and i looked at my mother, smiling. I had said my name! I was so proud of myself.

Serren smiled warmly as he said it, and more once he said it again.
"Yes, yes, very good. And did I hear little Amir say his, too?"
She looked at the little prancing foal who obviously was very pleased with himself. She picked up a leaf and started helping to dry Lovell. Soon he was dry, and then she heard his stomach rumble. She let the foals nurse, then began to eat herself. She pulled up the plants, and chewed. A bitter flavor seeped down her throat, and she swallowed, but her eyes grew wide. She tried to bring it back up, but couldnt, as she was a hrose.
"Maximus! I just swallowed-"
That was when her throat began to swell. She coughed, her breath labored. It was hard to move, and the world was getting small. She blinked rapidly, and she fell to her knees.

Amir watched in horror as his mother went down. He stared, then ran around crazily. He had no idea what to do except say
"Scared scared scared scared!"

MAXIMUS AS soon as Maximus saw Serren go down, he knew something was wrong. He heard Amir running around and saying scared, and Lovell standing stiff with fear, but Maximus just calmed himself down. He could remember just faintly a herb he remembered which bought food up. Looking at Lovell and Amir, he ordered them to stay by their mother. Lovell nodded and went over, but Amir just kept running around. Maximus galloped off, and searched until he found what he was looking for. He snatched it up, being careful not to swallow it, and came back to Serren. He chewed up it, being careful not to swallow it, and then spat it out and rolled the gooey ball of herb over to her. Lovell nudged the ball towards his mother. "This will bring up whatever you swallowed. Please eat it."Maximus explained, pleading the the latter part. He hoped she would. He couldn't lose her now. He just couldn't. LOVELL I was on my knees next to my mother. Fear was rippling through my body, and i knew my brother felt the same. He was running around in circles. I nudged the gooey ball of stuff my father had spat out, and listened to him speak. I could hear him pleading in his voice, and i felt shocked. I didn't know that adult horses could be scared. I nudged my mother's cheek, wondering what was wrong. Tears were beginning to well up in my eyes, and i spoke softly "Pl-please...you...m-mus...stay..."My voice was shaking, and my words didn't come out quite right, but good enough. Tears began to rolls down my face, dropping onto my mother and ground. I looked at my father worriedly, and he just looked at me. He looked as confused as i was. He didn't know what to do. That worried me more. If an adult didn't know what to do, how was i suppose to?

Serren's eyes closed, and her head fell to the ground.She heard Maximus say something, but stayed down. She couldn't get up, and her breath had stopped. Her mind was still working, but her body was shutting down. She couldn't breathe at all now, and she only thought that death must be seconds away.
Then she felt Lovell touch her cheek, and heard Amir's frightened words. Maximus's plead once more, and Serren's eyes opened slowly. They were the reason s he would try this last thing, to swallow that. Her jaws opened, blackness on the edge of her vision. She chewed, blackness growing. She forced the swallow, the blackness threatening to take over her sight. She shuddered, and her head fell back to the ground. Then she sucked in a lungful of air. I t felt like she was swallowing needles, but, she sucked in another, as the swelling was lessening. She continued to breathe and breathe until she had caught her breath
"Maximus... You saved my life... again."
She got wobbly to her feet, stumbled over to Maximus, and leaned against him. The foals gathered around her feet, and she looked into the morning sky,, and said a silent thank you.

Amir watched her eyes close, and her breathing stop. He almost had a heart attack. She was gone, dead. No breath, no movements. Then he saw her eyes open after Lovell had touched her cheek. Amir's own tears were falling now. Serren opened her mouth and chewed. When she swallowed, he almost died again as she gave a shudder, and fell back to the floor. Then she breathed. She breathed and breathed, and relief washed over Amir.
"Love you."
Amir said, and ran as fast as he could towards his mother and father. He leaned against her legs, closing his eyes.

MAXIMUS Relief flooded through him as Serren started breathing. Maximus fell to his knees next to her, as he had done when she had given birth. He saw Amir come over and press against her, and he smiled. He nuzzled Serren's shoulder, and looked at Amir and Lovell. They both looked healthy, and he thought maybe he'd let them go and explore on their own. Standing up straight, and looked at Lovell and Amir, and spoke "Lovell, Amir, why don't you two go and play by yourselves? You look strong enough."He lowered his head down to nuzzle Amir's shoulder, then did the same with Lovell. He breathed in both of their scents, memorizing it forever on his brain. Then he gently nudged Serren's shoulder, gesturing for her to get up. LOVELL I scrambled to my feet as quickly as I could as soon as I heard my father. I stumbled over to my brother, and began to nudge furiously at him. I wanted to go out on my own. Well, at least with my brother. I wanted to spend some time to get to know my brother. I mean, we were brothers, so i should know all about him. As soon as i thought he was up, I scrambled off to the otherside of the clearing, wanting to play.

Serren got to her hooves at Maximus's gesture. She nodded to the foals as they scampered off, heels and tail high in the air. She went over to Maximus, watching the foals run off.
"When was the last time we had fun? Oh, yeah, when I pushed you down a muddy hill."
At that, she kicked her feet out and cantered off, burning energy, hoping to have fun with Maximus.

Amir got to his feet at his brother's nudges. He flaled his legs around in a rear he had seen his father do before.except, he was not good at it. He landed clumsily, then galloped off after his brother. They chased each other around, in high spirits.

MAXIMUS Maximus watched the foals run off, and galloped after Serren as she ran. He laughed, a true laugh, something only Serren would be able to get. He hooves slid slightly down the hill, and he soon caught up with her. The marks from their hooves were soon filled up with water, as the ground had not yet dried. As they reached the border, he stopped, puffing heavily. He grinned at her though, happiness in his eyes. He went over and nuzzled her shoulder, and spoke "Oh yeah. What a great impression you put on me."He laughed again, a true, full, happy laugh. LOVELL Lovell saw his brother come over, and began to play with him. He nipped his fetlocks for fun, and occasionally gave a small push. He laughed, a high-pitched foal laugh. Suddenly, a scent came to his nostrils. He flared them, picking it up more clearly. He followed it, and soon came to a small burrow beneath a bush. "Come...look..."He said, although still not quite used to talking. He put his nose down to sniff at the burrow, and smelt a bit more. The smell was stale, so obviously the animal had left here long ago, but he still felt interested. He flicked his stubby tail, and shoved his nose in a little. He felt the bottom filled with old, soft leaves and a few branches snapped. He pulled his nose out, and looked at his brother, wanting him to look too.

Serren laughed along with him, as they slowed down at the top of the very hill she had pushed him down the first time.
"I was always good with impressions."
With that, she pushed with her nose on his shoulder, and like before, his weight shifted forward. As she shifted her own weight forward, she began to slide. The mud that splattered her chest was not even there in her mind- her mind was with Maximus.

Amir perked his ears as Lovell stuck his nose into a hole. He watched with his head slightly to the side. As he pulled his head out, Amir dove into the hole. It smelled old and stale, but there was something thumping in it. Something thumping towards him! He tried to jump backwards, but his muzzle was stuck. He wrenched it backwards, but to no avail.
"Help!"
It was muffled by the tunnel, but felt tiny claw slice his muzzle. He finally yanked his muzzle out, 3 tiny thin lines beaded with blood. He flashed around and galloped around in fear, wondering what horrible creature could do this.
He turned around just in time to see a jack rabbit bound away from the hole, the same smell that had been in the hole. His heart still racing, he trotted nervously to his brothers side.

((Sorry it took so long. My horse muse disappeared.)) MAXIMUS Maximus laughed, and gladly began to slide down the hill. The mud splattered his belly and legs, and a trail of dug up dirt was left behind from them. They splattered mud around, but he didn't mind. His mind wasn't on getting dirty or wet. It was with Serren, as it always would be. Then he heard a small cry. For a moment, he thought it was just his imagination. But then he heard a jack rabbit thumping away from the other side of the clearing. The same place where the foals had been. He leaped to the side, getting a firm footing, and flared his nostrils. He picked up the smell of the foals and...blood. Tensing his muscles, ready for a sprint, and called to Serren "One of the foals are hurt!"He took off at his top speed towards the foals, slipping slightly every once and a while. LOVELL When I heard my brother try to yell for help, I knew something was wrong. Fear rippled through me, and for a second I thought he was going to die. But then he pulled out his nose, and I knew he was okay. But that was when I smelt something. I had never smelt it before, but it was sort of metallic smelling. When I saw an animal hop away, I knew it had done something to my brother. When Amir came to my side, I looked at his muzzle. It had red stuff on it. And, even though I was young, all my instincts told me he was hurt. And that was blood. "H-help! Please!"I could feel tears welling up, and I felt worried and frightened for my brother. I looked around, and saw my father coming towards us so fast I was sure he was going to crash into us.
